Product Information
What is The Whatsie Play Couch?
The Whatsie Play Couch is a modular kids play couch designed in Australia for open-ended play, building, climbing, lounging and imaginative play.
Instead of a traditional fixed sofa, Whatsie is made from movable foam pieces that children can rearrange into forts, ramps, cubbies, obstacle courses, reading spots, pretend-play setups and more.
Are Whatsie play couches safe?
Absolutely! We take safety very seriously at Whatsie. All our play couches are made with premium high-density foam and the softest microsuede to create the perfect play couch.
Our foam is certified CertiPUR-US®, which is the gold standard for foam safety. Since it's certified, you can safely know that your play couch is: free of formaldehyde, phthalates, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. Low VOCs and made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEPC flame retardants. Made without ozone deleters and is environmentally innovative!
Our fabric are STANDARD 100 by
OEKO-TEX® certified meaning they are tested to the highest safety standards and free from any harmful substances and dyes.
How many pieces are included?
The Whatsie Play Couch includes 8 modular pieces, made from 10 individual cushions in total:
- 2 connected base sections, each made from 2 individual base cushions
- 2 full-length half-trapeziums
- 2 kid-sized armrests
- 2 Spot Cushions
The connected bases provide a large, supportive foundation for builds, while the smaller pieces can be moved and rearranged for different types of play.
What type of foam does Whatsie use?
The Whatsie Play Couch uses different foam densities across each cushion shape to provide the right balance of support, comfort and versatility.
- Base cushions: 33D foam
- Full-length half trapeziums: 30D foam
- Armrests: 25D foam
- Spot Cushions: 25D foam
Our foam is CertiPUR-US certified, and each density has been selected to suit the way that piece is designed to be used, from supportive bases for building and lounging to versatile smaller pieces for open-ended play.
Why does foam density matter in a play couch?
Different parts of a play couch have different jobs.
Whatsie's bases use firmer 33D foam to provide support for sitting, lounging and building. The full-length trapeziums use 30D foam, while the smaller armrests and Spot Cushions use 25D foam.
Using different densities allows each shape to provide the level of structure, comfort and versatility needed for its intended use.
What makes the Whatsie trapeziums different?
Every Whatsie Play Couch includes two full-length half trapeziums measuring 84 × 30 × 25 cm.
Each trapezium has a 15 cm flat top and a flat side, creating a versatile shape for stacking and building.
Children can use them as ramps, roofs, backrests, walls, slides and supports or incorporate them into their own imaginative builds.
What are the dimensions of a Whatsie Play Couch?
The individual Whatsie pieces measure:
- Connected base section: 168 × 84 × 12.5 cm
- Individual base cushion: 84 × 84 × 12.5 cm
- Full-length half trapezium: 84 × 30 × 25 cm
- Armrest: 55 × 12.5 × 12.5 cm
- Spot Cushion: 34 cm diameter × 8 cm thick
Because Whatsie is modular, its overall footprint changes depending on how you arrange the pieces.
What age is a play couch suitable for?
1-99 years. Whatsie is designed to grow with your family, with the way children use it naturally changing as they get older.
Younger children might use the pieces for movement, climbing and simple imaginative play, while older children can create more complex forts, obstacle courses, cubbies and pretend-play setups.
Adult supervision is recommended, particularly for younger children and active climbing play.
What can kids build with a Whatsie Play Couch?
A Whatsie can become almost anything you imagine.
Popular play couch builds include:
- Forts and cubbies
- Ramps and slides
- Obstacle courses
- Reading nooks
- Tunnels
- Pretend shops and cafés
- Cars, boats and rockets
- Lounges and movie-night setups
- Climbing and movement setups
- Beds for sleepovers
The bases, full-length trapeziums, armrests and Spot Cushions can all be rearranged to create different setups.
Is a play couch worth it?
A play couch can be particularly useful for families looking for one product that can support multiple types of play while also functioning as a comfortable place to sit, read or relax.
Unlike a toy with one fixed purpose, a modular play couch can be rebuilt and used differently as children's interests and abilities change.
The best play couch for your family will depend on your available space, your children's ages and how you expect to use it.
Where is Whatsie designed and made?
Whatsie is Australian designed and owned.
Our product components are manufactured in Asia by an experienced manufacturing partner with over 20 years of experience producing residential and commercial-grade foam products.
Whatsie's are packed and dispatched from our Australian warehouses in New South Wales and Victoria.
How long does the Whatsie take to expand?
Whatsie arrives compressed for shipping and can take up to two weeks to fully expand and settle into its usual shape.
Some wrinkles, compression marks or areas that haven't completely expanded are normal immediately after opening.
Your Whatsie can still be played with while it expands. Opening the zippers and using the couch can help the foam settle naturally.
How long can the Whatsie be kept in the box?
The Whatsie can be kept in the box for up to 12 weeks.
Can you sleep on a Whatsie Play Couch?
Whatsie can be arranged as a comfortable lounging or sleepover space.
The two large connected bases can be positioned to create a generous padded surface for movie nights, quiet time and occasional sleepovers.
Whatsie is a play couch rather than a replacement for a permanent bed or children's sleep surface.

What warranty does a Whatsie Play Couch have?

Do you offer change-of-mind returns?
Yes. Whatsie offers a 30-day change-of-mind period.
To be eligible for a change-of-mind return, you'll need to provide proof of purchase and return the product unused and saleable in its original, sealed packaging.
Original delivery fees are non-refundable and return shipping costs are the customer's responsibility.
Cleaning & Care
Are Whatsie covers machine washable?
Yes. Whatsie covers are removable and machine washable.
Wash the covers separately in cold water and hang them to dry. Avoid tumble drying, as heat may cause the fabric to shrink.
Small marks can also be spot cleaned with a damp cloth between washes.
Always follow the care instructions provided for your particular Whatsie fabric.
How do you clean Whatsie?
We all know that little hands can make big messes!
That's why the Whatsie is spill resistant and the covers are machine washable. Simply pop your covers on a gentle cold water cycle on their own and hang the covers to dry in a shady spot. For the small stuff, spot cleaning with a damp cloth is recommended.
