Whatsie started in 2019 with a Sydney Mum and simple idea: create beautiful, versatile play furniture that gives kids more ways to play.

Designed in Australia for real family homes, Whatsie brings together open-ended play, thoughtful design and furniture you’ll actually want in your living space.

Today, we’re incredibly proud to be part of more than 30,000 homes across Australia and New Zealand.

From One Family to Another

Whatsie was founded by Lisa a paediatric medical specialist in 2019, bringing Australia’s original play couch to families looking for more open-ended ways to play at home.

Years later, Amelia already knew and loved Whatsie because her own family had one in their home.

As a Mum, she’d seen firsthand how her children used their Whatsie for movement, building, imaginative play, quiet time and everyday family life.

So when the opportunity came to purchase Whatsie, it felt like a natural fit.

Amelia took on the business with a clear vision for its next chapter: keep everything families already loved about the original Whatsie while continuing to improve the quality, design and possibilities for play.

Today, Whatsie remains proudly Australian owned and designed, with a growing range created for the way families actually live and play.

Made for More Than Sitting

A Whatsie isn’t just a kids’ couch.

It’s a fort before breakfast. A ramp by lunchtime. A cubby, obstacle course, reading nook, pretend shop or movie-night couch by the end of the day.

The original Whatsie Play Couch includes 8 modular pieces, made from 10 individual cushions, including our distinctive full-length half trapeziums.

Each shape has been considered for open-ended play, giving kids the pieces and leaving what happens next entirely up to them.

What Makes a Whatsie Different?

One of the things that has always set Whatsie apart is its full-length half trapeziums.

At 84 cm long with a 15 cm flat top and flat side, they’re designed to create stable, versatile surfaces for building.

They can become ramps, roofs, slides, walls, backrests and building supports, or something completely different when kids take over.

Inside, we’ve selected different foam densities for different pieces too, with 33D foam in the bases, 30D in the trapeziums and 25D in the armrests and Spot Cushions.

Because good play furniture isn’t just about how many pieces come in the box. It’s about what kids can actually do with them.

We care about what’s inside a Whatsie just as much as how it looks in your home.

Our Play Couches use CertiPUR-US® certified foam and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified fabrics.

Our covers are removable and machine washable, with YKK® zippers, double-stitched seams and overlocked construction designed for everyday family life.

We’ve also chosen fabrics that feel like proper furniture, including our soft 240gsm Original Microsuede and plush 260gsm wide-wale Corduroy.
